2017 Mock Draft 2.0: Quarter Season Edition

Due to the overwhelming popularity of my last mock draft, I have decided to make another one after the first quarter of the season. I want to thank you all so much for reading this blog and allowing me to share my opinions in a crowded environment that is social media. That all being said, here is how I have developed draft order with tiebreakers:

-         Win/loss record
-         Divisional record
-         Conference win/loss record
-         Non-conference win/loss record
-         Current win/loss streak
-         If all else fails, I flip a coin

Now that that’s established we can dive right in.

-         Every draft analysist has draft crushes. Here are some of my favorites through five weeks of college football (besides some of the more obvious names): Jamal Adams, Ryan Anderson, Sidney Jones, Dalvin Cook, Devonte Fields and Royce Freeman.
-         This year’s draft looks to be top heavy, especially as certain positions such as EDGE defender, cornerback, and running back. With all that in mind, we can see one of two things. One, good players from other positions will be pushed down the board. Two, other players will rise up the board while players in a deep position will be pushed down due to depth.
-         I like to do my mocks based on how I view a player, what I think will happen, and best available. Some notable names to be left out of this mock include: Dan Feeney, Royce Freeman, DeMarcus Walker, Adoree’ Jackson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike McGlinchey, Dawuane Smoot, Cordrea Tankersley, Raekwon McMillan and Chris Wormley.
-         Some names are in this list that previously were not mentioned in my last mock. As is with every season, guys will move up and down the board constantly as the year progresses. Keep in mind, this is only the beginning. Once the draft process starts, things are really going to start shaking up.
-         Alabama and Michigan look to dominate this year’s draft. It isn’t a surprise that they are both big time contenders for this year’s college football playoffs. With Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh hanging around their respective schools for a while, we are going to continue seeing these teams dominate the draft. Alabama has been at it for years, but consider this Michigan’s renaissance.
-         LSU is a school that puts in NFL caliber players and yet never does anything relevant during the season. However, with the recent firing of head coach Les Miles, maybe the Tigers can find a head coach to take this program to new heights and win championships. Guys like Leonard Fournette, Travin Dural and Malachi Dupre are having their talents wasted away. Better coaching could result in guys like them being first round picks (Fournette being an obvious exception, as he appears to be a top 10 lock).
-         Alright, that’s a ton of college talk. Let’s bring our focus back to the NFL. This mock is based off current standings and I would truly be shocked if teams such as Arizona or Carolina wound up with top 10 picks. There is a lot of season left and players and teams will be continually shuffled around until we get to draft day.
-         Five weeks into the college season and we can already tell just how weak this wide receiver class is. Outside of Mike Williams, I don’t see any other receiver worth even a top 50 pick. Obviously there will be guys taken that high because of how the NFL is focused around passing the football. Names like Isaiah Ford, Darren Carrington, and Corey Davis are popular names right now in the draft community. The two I named in my previous mock, KD Cannon and Artavis Scott, are slipping down my board fast. JuJu Smith-Schuster is now being regarded as a system wide receiver and with USC wide receivers’ recent track record, odds are stacked against him.
-         Last point, the quarterback class is super thin. The consensus top three names appear to be DeShone Kizer, Deshaun Watson, and Brad Kaaya. Kizer has had a meteoric rise to the top, whereas Watson and Kaaya are watching their stock slip due to bad/average play. The senior crop is universally disliked, with Chad Kelly appearing to be the “top dog”. It is not a good year to need a quarterback.
