Who You Got?! Week 8

We had our first (and hopefully last) tie of the season last week! Now approaching the half way point in the season, we can begin to fully understand just how unpredictable the NFL can be. I am not the smartest analyst in the world, but I will tell you that I certainly know what I am talking about. The record is only there to show you just how crazy Sundays can get. With that said, how about I pick out who is going to win/lose this week?

Last Week: 9-5-1
Overall: 63-43-1

Thursday Night Football (5:25 pm AZ time):

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Tennessee Titans

This game features two young and talented rosters that likely won’t see a record higher than 8-8 this year. So naturally, this game becomes a primetime event. The casual NFL fan likely won’t care to tune in to this game, but you can make certain that I’ll be paying attention to how this game goes. The Jaguars certainly had the higher expectations coming into this year but that means nothing going into this game. Marcus Mariota is playing lights out football and will terrorize a young Jaguars defense all night while Blake Bortles struggles once again. This game will be low scoring. Give me the home team by six.

Sunday Morning Football (10:00 am AZ time):

Washington @ Cincinnati Bengals (London)

The Bengals cannot go into this game underestimating Washington. The Bengals have vastly underachieved all season long and could easily drop this game. Washington, however, is missing key cogs on their team in the form of Jordan Reed and Josh Norman (concussions). Even if they play Sunday, they won’t be at 100%. The Bengals have a lot to prove right now and with how well the AFC West has been playing, they may need to win the AFC North if they want a shot at the post season. Look for a statement win for the Bengals before they enter their bye week in week nine.

Seattle Seahawks @ New Orleans Saints

This needs to be the week the Seahawks offense puts something together. Facing one of the worst defenses in the league, the pressure is now on for Russell Wilson to make something happen and score points. Coming off a week in which the Seahawks were lucky to get six points, all eyes are on the offense. Drew Brees will have his hands full against a very good Seattle defense, but should still be able to have himself a fantasy relevant day. Thankfully for the Saints, this game is in New Orleans. Unfortunately, that ultimately won’t be enough to stop a Seahawks team in need of a statement game.

Arizona Cardinals @ Carolina Panthers

The Cardinals as of late have not played well in Carolina. Fresh off a bye week, Cam Newton and the Panthers are hungry for a big win to save their season. They will run into a defense that had arguably the most dominant performance of the season, however. The Cardinals and the Panthers both need this win badly, but a bad Carolina secondary and offense line will be their downfall, while David Johnson gets 150+ scrimmage yards.

Oakland Raiders @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Raiders look really good… well besides their defense, that is. The Buccaneers not only get home-field advantage, but also feature one of the league’s better pass offense. Add in how well the supporting cast of Jacquizz Rodgers and Peyton Barber have been at running back for the Bucs, and this game could be a shootout. Derek Carr and Amari Cooper should get things going but the Raiders defense will ultimately be their downfall on the road against a team looking to challenge for their division title.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Indianapolis Colts

Alex Smith is once again playing mistake-free football and Spencer Ware looks like the guy to make things happen at running back. Marcus Peters looks like the Defensive Player of the Year and the Chiefs as a whole look competitive every week. The Colts, behind the arm of Andrew Luck, are playing more competitive than I would’ve thought but the defense once again can’t stop a nose bleed. Ware is going to have a field day while Smith does just enough to put up points on nearly every drive. The Colts would easily be able to win this game if the defense could just get a stop, but ultimately will lose the time of possession battle and be unable to keep up.

New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills

The Patriots only loss this year came at the hands of the Bills back in week four and were straight up shutout. Here’s the big difference: The Patriots didn’t have MVP Tom Brady back then. Now that he’s back, expect the Patriots to have revenge on their minds and go into this game with the full intention to shutdown anything the Bills try to get going. A hampered-at-best Shady McCoy won’t be enough for the Bills offense to get anything going and put up minimal points in what will be the most lop-sided victory of the week.

New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns

It seems fair to pick against the Browns every week, but this could finally be the week that they get their first win. Unfortunately, this analyst doesn’t think so. The Jets are coming off a very impressive victory of the Ravens and look to get their offense rolling once again against one of the league’s porous defenses. The Jets rack up five sacks and Brandon Marshall nabs two touchdowns in a crucial road win for the J-E-T-S. JETS. JETS. JETS. JETS.

Detroit Lions @ Houston Texans

The Texans need to get things going in a hurry if they want a shot at the postseason. They may play in a very weak AFC South, but the Titans are now very quietly 4-4 on the year and the Colts offense has a chance to win them nine games. Unfortunately for them, they will run into a Lions teaming facing an MVP caliber Matthew Stafford, who will proceed to throw three touchdowns against a stout Texans secondary. The Texans offense will once again be unable to get in sync and lose another game at home.

Sunday Afternoon Football (1:05 and 1:25 pm AZ time):

San Diego Chargers @ Denver Broncos

The Broncos need this win to be able to take the lead in the division while the Chargers look to sweep the Broncos and sit at 4-4 and just a game back from first place in a loaded AFC West. Philip Rivers is playing out of his mind while Melvin Gordon just piles on the touchdowns. Too bad for them, this game is in Denver and the defense will be hungry to put lots of pressure on Rivers. Trevor Siemian will get the job done once again and the Broncos a major win in the division.

Green Bay Packers @ Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons, or more specifically Julio Jones, will be salivating at the idea of gashing this Packers secondary. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are coming off an impressive win against the Bears and have had plenty of rest time thanks to playing last Thursday night. The Packers will be forced to throw a lot without a stable run game, but thankfully have the weapons to keep up with the Falcons high-scoring offense. This game will be a shootout, but I trust Rodgers to come in the clutch and put together a game winning drive to win the game.

Sunday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

Philadelphia Eagles @ Dallas Cowboys

Who would’ve thought this game would be as important as it is? The Eagles get my vote for surprise team of the year and the Cowboys roll out two rookies who are both favorites for the Rookie of the Year award. This game is going to be very entertaining to watch and will also give us a very good idea of who will win the surprisingly competitive NFC East. As much as I wanted to take the Eagles here, I went with the home team and will bet on Zeke Elliott to roll up another 100-yard rushing day.

Monday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

Minnesota Vikings @ Chicago Bears

Happy Halloween, CHI-town! The Purple People Eaters are coming to town and are going to absolutely embarrass your defense. This game is going to be a nightmare for the Bears, who have looked downright awful this year. Jay Cutler returns, but I fully expect him to toss multiple interceptions and seal the game away early thanks to a good-enough Vikings offense.

Quick Hits: Week 7

Another week goes by and we are now entering the half way point of the season. It’s flying by us so hang on tight, everyone. Contenders for the playoffs and for top five draft picks are being established. Which one applies to your team? Anyways, let’s just get right into this week’s Quick Hits.

-         After a disappointing rookie year, Blake Bortles turned in a very impressive sophomore year, tossing 4,428 yards and 37 total touchdowns. This season, however, has been anything but impressive. Bortles, through six games, has tossed 1,567 yards with nine touchdowns to nine interceptions. In fact, Bortles has 44 interceptions through 36 games for his career. Last I checked that’s not good. If the Jaguars end up with a losing record, and it looks like they will, expect coaching changes to be made. Hopefully, the next head coach can be offensive minded and help to take Bortles to the next level. At just 24 years old, Bortles has a high ceiling. But to reach that potential, he needs to cut down on the turnovers big time.

-         On the flip side, Tom Brady is back to his dominant self. Through just three games, Brady has 1,004 passing yards and eight touchdowns. More impressively, he has yet to throw an interception and is completing an unbelievable 75.2% of his passes. With Brady playing this good and the defense remaining opportunistic, the Patriots are thinking Super Bowl. If I had to bet on a team to win it all, you better believe I am taking New England.

-         While many people absolutely hated this past week’s Sunday Night Football featuring the Seahawks at the Cardinals, I enjoyed every second of it. I am of the group that enjoys watching dominant defenses compared to high-scoring offenses. That is completely different from watching bad offenses result in a low scoring game, FYI. The Cardinals and the Seahawks have two of the best defenses in the NFL and it was completely in display Sunday night. Defenses win championships, people!

-         Staying on the topic of last Sunday Night Football, I HATE ties. If you are going to say a team tied, you might as well just give both teams the loss. I understand the argument that players are exhausted after four plus quarters and I realize that I am biased as a fan to not want a tie, but team owners, coaches and players don’t like ties, either. If it were up to me, you either go to the rules in the playoffs, where the game doesn’t end until you have a definitive winner, or you make it so that it is easier to score, such as placing the ball inside the opponent’s territory to start every drive. No more ties. It makes everything that much more complicated and no one likes them.

-         One last point from Sunday Night Football: kickers. Kickers are the scapegoats of the NFL, but when the perform as badly as Arizona’s Chandler Catanzaro and Seattle’s Steven Hauschka, it is a title easily earned. Both kickers missed what would have been game winning field goals in over time that were both within 30 yards. I mean that is shorter than a PAT! Come on, man! Those are chip-shot field goals. You are in the NF-freaking-L. You are getting paid upwards of millions of dollars to kick a damn football. You cannot miss field goals like that, especially with as much playoff implications as those kicks had. I understand it is not easy, but that is why they are doing it: because they are capable of doing it. It makes guys like Justin Tucker, Dan Bailey and Stephen Gostkowski that much more valuable because of how automatic they are (38/43 combined on the year), especially when it matters.

-         Can the Cleveland Browns complete the NFL’s second ever 0-16 season? Sitting at 0-7, it sure does seem possible. The Browns have had six (two-hands!) starting quarterbacks this year and have no consistency neither offensively nor defensively. The little bit of talent they do have simply isn’t enough to make a vital enough difference. This team is simply the worst team that I have ever witnessed. Going 0-16 seems like a real possibility but there is one big thing the organization needs to remember: This team is a work in progress and blowing it all up after one atrocious season is not going to fix things any faster. The Browns needs to retain their entire staff for a minimum of two seasons to start moving forward no matter how bad this season ends up being.

-         Quick! Who is leading the NFL in sacks? Von Miller? Chandler Jones? Khalil Mack? Well, all those answers are wrong. Lorezno Alexander is leading the NFL in sacks with nine. Alexander is an EDGE rusher for the Buffalo Bills who going into this season had nine career sacks. Known primarily as a special teams ace throughout his career, Alexander has found a nice niche with the Bills and is enjoying a career year at 33-years old.

-         What division is the NFL’s best? For my money’s worth, it is the AFC West. With the Raiders and Broncos tied at the top with a 5-2 record, the Chiefs and Chargers aren’t far behind at 4-3 and 3-4 respectively. What do they all have in common? Good-to-manageable quarterback play and defenses that can force turnovers. With the way things are headed, it wouldn’t shock me at all to see all four of these teams end with, at worst, seven wins. With how weak the AFC is currently, the AFC West could easily send three teams to the playoffs. We still have another half of football to play, but things are looking up for the AFC West right now.

-         Finally, through seven games Julio Jones leads the NFL with 830 receiving yards through just seven games. That puts Jones on pace for 1,897 receiving yards(!) this season. With three more divisional games (featuring bad pass defenses) and nine games left on the schedule, on question is on everybody’s mind: Can Julio Jones be the first receiver ever to record 2,000 receiving yards in a single season? My answer is yes. Jones has an unreal physicality to him that asserts him as the best receiver in the league and with how lights out his quarterback, Matt Ryan, has been, it is entirely possible Jones can do it. Of course, the odds are stacked against him, but here’s hoping that Jones can make history

Who You Got?! Week 7

My luck was bound to eventually luck out. With my first losing record (by one game) on the year, I have decided I need to take more factors into these games. Predicting winners and losers every week certainly isn't easy, but it's what I am here for. Never forget one simple rule, folks: Any Given Sunday. For those who don't know, it basically states that anything can happen and nothing is a sure thing. Always take that into account when picking games. That said, let's get into this week's games.

Last Week: 7-8
Overall: 54-38

Thursday Night Football (5:25 pm AZ time):

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers

The Packers are desperately in need of a big win, and there is no better opportunity to do so than tonight against the Bears. The Bears have the league’s 21st ranked run defense and the Packers will be without star Eddie Lacy after he hit injured reserve today. The Packers will more than likely need to rely on the arm of Aaron Rodgers to lead them to this victory and that seems pretty likely to happen.

Sunday Morning Football (10:00 am AZ time):

New York Giants @ Los Angeles Rams

I am not a believer in the Rams. They are ruining Todd Gurley by providing zero run blocking for him and this team is one bad loss away from washing their season down the drain. The Giants, meanwhile, are coming off a close win that included stud receiver Odell Beckham having his best game of the year (8/222/2). Look for Beckham to get going again and this very expensive Giants pass rush to finally provide sacks against one of the league’s worst offensive lines.

Minnesota Vikings @ Philadelphia Eagles

If we are being honest, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Eagles pull off this win. They are at home and are playing very opportunistic football right now, despite dropping two straight games. That being said, the Vikings are finding ways to win every week and are coming fresh off a bye week. The Vikings defense will suffocate the Eagles offense and make Carson Wentz more uncomfortable than he has been all season long.

Indianapolis Colts @ Tennessee Titans

The Titans very quietly have a great pass rush. Edge rusher Brian Orakpo leads the team with seven sacks and should have a monster day against a below average at best Colts’ offensive line. The Colts offense should be able to put up points (if they can keep Andrew Luck upright). However, with how good Marcus Mariota has played the last two weeks (six touchdowns to one interception) plus a bad Colts’ defense, the Titans should have the edge in this game.

Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are coming off a very impressive win against the Steelers, but the Bills remain red hot coming off a game in which they scored 45 points. LeSean McCoy is more than likely out for the Bills, unfortunately. This could lead Miami to another surprise victory, but I am a firm believer in Tyrod Taylor and the number one rushing offense in the NFL.

Baltimore Ravens @ New York Jets

The Ravens are in desperate need for a win after dropping their last three games. Fun fact: The Ravens have won their three wins by a combined 13 points and lost their three loses by a combined 11 points. With Ben Roethlisberger out for an extended period of time with a meniscus tear, this is the perfect opportunity for the Ravens to capitalize and get a foothold on the division. Look for the Ravens deep passing attack to punish a bad Jets’ secondary all day long.

New Orleans Saints @ Kansas City Chiefs

The Saints have been a nice surprise this year, staying in most games thanks to drew Brees and his seemingly never-aging arm. The Chiefs will have star running back Jamaal Charles back to close to 100% this week but also have Spencer Ware to help divvy out some damage. The Chiefs offense should put up plenty of points while Marcus Peters and the Chiefs’ defense force three turnovers and win big at home.

Cleveland Browns @ Cincinnati Bengals

Almost the exact same thing said above about the Ravens can be said here for the Bengals. The Browns are absolutely terrible and will get torched by A.J. Green all day long.

Washington @ Detroit Lions

The Lions offense is dynamic, thanks to Matthew Stafford. The Washington defense is 21st and 14th in total yards allowed and passing yards allowed respectively. While the Washington offense should be able to keep pace with the Lions’ offense, this game ultimately will go to the home team with the better quarterback.

Oakland Raiders @ Jacksonville Jaguars

Something about this games just feels like a trap game for the Raiders… On the road and against an offense that desperately needs to get going, this is the perfect opportunity for the Jaguars, who are on a two game winning streak, to capitalize on the league’s worst pass defense. However, the Raiders’ offense is clicking just fine and will continue to move forward against the Jaguars. My man Jalen Ramsey will have his hands full with another favorite player of mine, Amari Cooper. I look forward to those two squaring off for 60 minutes.

Sunday Afternoon Football (1:05 and 1:25 pm AZ time):

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ San Francisco 49ers

Fresh off a nice division win and bye week, the Buccaneers come to the Bay Area looking for a statement win against one of the league’s worst teams. The 49ers will be without running back Carlos Hyde and will field a quarterback in Colin Kaepernick who struggled mightily in his first action of the year against the Bills. The Buccaneers, powered behind Jameis Winston and Mike Evans, will win big on the road and sit at .500 and second place in the NFC South behind the Atlanta Falcons.

San Diego Chargers @ Atlanta Falcons

Speaking of the Falcons, this game against the Chargers could prove vital for them. After an extremely controversial loss to the Seahawks last week, the Falcons should be plenty pissed off and ready to take it out on whoever they play this week. The Chargers, unfortunately, are that team. This game should be very close, but I give the edge to the home team in this game.

New England Patriots @ Pittsburgh Steelers

A pissed off Tom Brady meets a Steelers’ team without Ben Roethlisberger and the 31st ranked pass defense. I don’t care that this game is in Pittsburgh. This game will not be close. Patriots by 20+.

Sunday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are coming off a very impressive win versus the Jets, in which the held New York to just three points. The Seahawks have looked pretty damn good for most the season, save an awful game against the Rams. The Cardinals pass rush will feast on one the league’s worst offensive lines and make Seattle very one-dimensional thanks to the porous run game. On prime-time with huge implications on the division, the Cardinals show up big time and get a crucial, season saving win.

Monday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

Houston Texans @ Denver Broncos

The Texans are coming off a very clutch win against the Colts during a prime-time game. The Broncos are coming off an embarrassing loss during a prime-time game. So naturally, we pit these two against each other for a prime-time game. It’s Brock Osweiler’s return to Denver since leaving this offseason during free agency and he is looking to prove the Broncos that they should have paid him like the Texans did. Unfortunately, the Broncos are out to prove they aren’t pretenders and get a crucial win at home. Sorry, Brock. Maybe next time.

Quick Hits: Week 6

It's that time of the week again. Time to assess week six and break down everything we learned. There's plenty of controversy and mystery going into week seven so let's not waste any time and dive right into it.

-       -  The Ryan Fitzpatrick train appears to finally be at an end. After calling for the Jets to bench him in last week's Quick Hits, the Jets have officially slated Geno Smith as the starter this week versus the Ravens. For better or for worse, this is a move that needed to happen. After throwing for just 174 yards and an interception against the Cardinals on Monday night, it makes sense that the Jets begin to explore their other options at quarterback.

-       -  It appears that the Raiders are destined to move out of Oakland and become the “Las Vegas Raiders”. Something about that name just has a nice ring to it… The “Oakland Raiders” does sound much better, however. Owner Mark Davis seems set on the move, trademarking the “Las Vegas Raiders”. Davis did say the Raiders would remain in Oakland for at least two more seasons (likely so Vegas can build a stadium in that time period). I’m sorry Raiders fans. Enjoy it while it lasts. Look at the bright side: The Raiders are talented enough to win a Super Bowl in that time period!

-       -  Ben Roethlisberger tore his meniscus in last week’s game against the Dolphins and could be out for 4-6 weeks. This is not good news for the Steelers considering their next six weeks goes as followed: vs NE, BYE, @ BAL, vs DAL, @ CLE, @ IND. The bye week will be much needed, but should Roethlisberger miss six weeks the Steelers could be in a world of hurt. I only see two winnable games (Cleveland and Indianapolis) without Big Ben and for all we know they could go winless. That will not happen and if the defense and Le’Veon Bell step up they could win four of those games. They need those wins badly, because if the Ravens or the Bengals can get hot they can take a big division lead. This goes especially for the Ravens, who play the Steelers in week nine.

-       -  Chris Simms of Bleacher Report made an excellent comparison regarding the Tony Romo – Dak Prescott situation. Simms compared the situation to the Drew Bledsoe – Tom Brady situation the Patriots faced way back in 2001. I have to agree that right now Prescott needs to remain the starter no matter when Romo returns. The Cowboys’ offense has been dynamic behind Prescott’s (almost) mistake free football and Ezekiel Elliott’s MVP caliber year. The Cowboys have a realistic shot to win the division and get to the NFC title game. Why would you jeopardize that for a quarterback that was injured most of last season and struggled mightily when he did see the field?

-       -  Richard Sherman got away with what might end up being the most controversial call (or rather non-call) of the season. Versus the Atlanta Falcons, Sherman committed what can only be described as the most blatant pass interference I have ever seen on Julio Jones. There was no call on fourth-down and the Falcons would lose the game. I am not a believer that one call determines a game. If you lose and blame the loss on one call then you didn’t deserve the win. However, this is what is wrong with officiating. This isn’t pass interference but this is, apparently.

-       -  Who is the best running back in the NFL right now? the Arizona Cardinals’ David Johnson has my vote. Johnson already has 833 scrimmage yards this season (568 of those rushing) and right touchdowns. Johnson has displayed excellent patience and field vision as well as a terrific blend of speed and power. Add in the fact that he is just as dynamic as a pass catcher and there doesn’t seem to be a thing Johnson can’t do. Guys like Ezekiel Elliott, Le’Veon Bell and LeSean McCoy all deserve a ton of props and can certainly be argued as the best of the best, but this writer is sticking with Johnson as the best running back in the NFL.

-       -  Let’s end this week’s Quick Hits with a rant on one of the NFL’s most controversial players: Vontaze Burfict. Burfict, a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals, is no stranger to controversy and is known as a “dirty” player. This past week against the Patriots only furthered those accusations. Burfict was involved in a controversial hit of Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett, hitting him low around his knees, and then later caught intentionally stomping on the leg of LeGarrette Blount. Burfict was suspended the first three games of the year for his unbelievably dirty hits in last season’s AFC Wildcard game against the Steelers. I won’t be the first to say this and I certainly will not be the last, but Burfict has all the talent in the world but no common sense to put it all together. He is immature and unstable. His head coach certainly doesn’t help matters, as Bleacher Report noted that Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he “didn’t do anything wrong”. I am not a Marvin Lewis fan but that is a whole other article for another time. Burfict has no business playing in the NFL. And for a league that claims they are all about player safety, it is BAFFLING to see how little they punish a repeat offender like Vontaze Burfict.

Who You Got?! Week 6

Last week was probably my most impressive week when it came to win-loss record. This week appears to be easier, but my favorite phrase when it comes to football is this: Any given Sunday. It basically means that anything can happen and you should never think that something is guaranteed. Even the Browns could win a game!

Last week: 10-4
Overall: 47-30

Thursday Night Football (5:25 pm AZ time):

Denver Broncos @ San Diego Chargers

The Chargers seem to find ways to lose every week and I don’t see that stopping anytime soon. Between a dominant Broncos defense (albeit, one that just got abused by a very good Falcons offense) and a shaky offensive line, the Chargers will struggle to put up points. I will take Denver in a low scoring affair.

Sunday Morning Football (10:00 am AZ time):

Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints

The Panthers secondary is bad but the Saints defense as a whole is bad. This should be a high scoring affair and I will take the team who can get to the opposing quarterback on a consistent basis. Advantage, Carolina.

Cleveland Browns @ Tennessee Titans

The Browns are bad. Also, the Titans are coming off their most complete game of the season. Give me the home team by 10+.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington

The Lions found a way to make the Eagles offense somewhat mortal. Washington is coming off a lackluster win against the Ravens. With how wide open the NFC East appears, either of these teams could win the division. This game should hopefully show us what each team is made of. I like the Eagles a lot better than Washington right now. Even on the road, I am buying into the Eagles hype train.

Cincinnati Bengals @ New England Patriots

The Bengals have not looked good for most of the season. Now they have to travel to Foxborough and face a red-hot Patriots team? Yeah, this won’t go very well for the Bengals, who will drop to a shocking 2-4 on the season after this loss.

Baltimore Ravens @ New York Giants

This game could go either way. But with a dominant Ravens defense against a one-dimensional Giants offense, I don’t see this going very well for the Giants. If the Ravens offense can’t get clicking behind new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, it could spell serious trouble for Baltimore. This will be a low scoring affair, I find the Ravens have too much to lose and will grind out a close win on the road.

San Francisco 49ers @ Buffalo Bills

The Bills are getting hotter than Rex and Rob Ryan’s seats. Being at home will certainly help their case but not nearly as much as playing against Colin Kaepernick fresh off the bench. I don’t see Kaepernick coming out and dominating anytime soon, if ever. This should be another lop-sided loss for San Francisco.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Chicago Bears

The Bears offense behind Brian Hoyer hasn’t been half bad. The Jaguars are fresh off a bye week and an impressive win two weeks ago against the Colts. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a high scoring game out of these two this week. Even on the road, I think the Jaguars offense will prove to be too much for a lackluster Bears defense. This game stays within seven.

Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit Lions

This will be the week that Todd Gurley puts it all together. Though half the blame (generously) needs to be shouldered by the Rams offensive line, I think this is the week that Gurley ramps up a big game and helps LA to get going. Unfortunately, the Lions offense behind Matthew Stafford will pick apart this Rams defense. Stafford has been hot-and-cold this year but I think he can have back-to-back successful games this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Miami Dolphins

This game will not be close. Steelers win by 20+ behind the trio of Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell.

Sunday Afternoon Football (1:05 and 1:25 pm AZ time):

Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders

Even with the worst defense in the NFL, the Raiders offense is simply to high octane to stop. This Chiefs defense has been hit-and-miss at times this season and Marcus Peters vs Amari Cooper will be a great match up to keep an eye on. End of the day, I will take the home team in a great division match up.

Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers

Ezekiel Elliott has been a world-beater so far this season. On the contrary, the Packers defense has been impossible to run on. Whoever can win in the trenches will win this game, and I think that the Packers defense is for real. Add in a great Packers offense and this game likely will be close the entire way. Give me Green Bay by three.

Atlanta Falcons @ Seattle Seahawks

Even with how great Seattle’s home-field advantage is, the Falcons just seem unstoppable right now. The Falcons did just abuse the Denver Broncos’ lights out defense and could very well take advantage of Seattle’s defense as well. With how bad Seattle’s offensive line has been, the Falcons pass rush will take full advantage and abuse Russell Wilson for 60 minutes.

Sunday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans

The Texans offense needs a good kick in the ass to get going and there is no better way to do that than playing the Colts’ “defense”. Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney have to be licking their chops looking at this Colts offensive line that has already surrendered 20 sacks this season. Add in the home-field advantage factor and this game shouldn’t be close.

Monday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

New York Jets @ Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals offense, powered by David Johnson, will steamroll this below average Jets defense. Leonard Williams and company should be able to pressure Carson Palmer all day, but with how bad Darrelle Revis has been I think the Cardinals will find ways to attack the Jets and put up major points. Plus, Ryan Fitzpatrick is BAD. The Cardinals’ defense should get two or more turnovers to help their cause.

Quick Hits: Week 5

Sorry about this coming out a day later than usual. College life certainly doesn’t work with your schedule. Five weeks down, 12 to go. This has been a very fun season with plenty of surprises. No one would've thought the Vikings would be cruising to a 5-0 record despite all of their injuries. Unsurprisingly, the Browns sit at 0-5 with not much seemingly going right. Anyways, we have plenty to talk about this week so let’s get right into it.

-       -  Ryan Fitzpatrick has been terrible this year. Everyone wondered why the Jets didn’t resign him for big time money this offseason, it’s because the last big money deal he signed after a good season was with Buffalo. It followed up that good season with bad numbers, including 24 touchdown passes to 23 interceptions. So far this year, he has 10 interceptions to just five touchdown passes. History tends to repeat itself, and thus far Fitzpatrick is only proving that the Jets were right in their decision to not sign him to a big money contract.

-       -  On the topic of Fitzpatrick, I am calling out the Jets organization to BENCH him now. he has looked terrible and the team is suffering because of his decision making. I am not here to say Geno Smith or Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty or far better options, but it wouldn’t hurt to see what you got in them. At most, give Fitzpatrick one last shot vs the Cardinals. But when he fails, and he will, bench him and start moving forward.

-       -  Ezekiel Elliott has taken the hype as the fourth overall pick and run away with it (pun intended). He already has 546 rushing yards and five touchdowns with a ridiculous 5.0 yards a carry. He is on pace for nearly 1,800 rushing yards as a rookie! To put that in perspective, the record for rushing yards by a rookie is 1,808 by Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson back in 1983. Zeke has a realistic opportunity to make history this season and behind an offensive line as dominant as the Cowboys’ have, even 2,000 yards could be possible.

-       -  As good as the Vikings defense has been playing, it never occurred to me just how good they’ve been until the NFL’s Instagram account put out this picture comparing them to the legendary ’85 Bears’ defense. The similarities are insane and we could be watching one of the best defenses of the 2010s. we have been spoiled with great defense such as the Legion of Boom or the 2015 Denver Broncos, but something about this Vikings defense feels like it could be even better than both of them.

-       -  The Ravens parted ways with offensive coordinator Marc Trestman after a loss Sunday to Washington. Trestman elected to have Joe Flacco throw the ball 46 times despite a comfortable lead and only giving Terrance West 11 carries despite the fact that he had 95 yards on those 11 carries. The Ravens have promoted Marty Mornhinweg to be the offensive coordinator and hopefully instill some stability in the offense.

-       -  The 49ers have announced that Colin Kaepernick will be the starting quarterback this week vs the Bills. Kaepernick as we all know has been involved in a highly controversial movement involving him and other NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Looking at it from a pure football perspective, Kaepernick is a below average starting quarterback but can he really be as bad as current starter Blaine Gabbert (five touchdowns to six interceptions)?

-       -  Tom Brady is back, ladies and gentlemen, and he is pissed off. Brady took the Browns behind the woodshed and painted their back porch red, throwing for 406 yards and three touchdown passes (all to Martellus Bennett). This should be a warning to the rest of the league. No matter how bad the Browns are, Brady sent a clear message in week five: get ready for a fight.

-       -  The funniest (sorry Charger fans) story of the season thus far has to be how the Chargers find a way to lose every week. After shanking a game-winning field goal on a botched snap last week against the Raiders, the Chargers will take on the Broncos tonight and will likely stall out plenty of times against on the NFL’s elite defenses.

-       -  Good news though, Chargers fans! Joey Bosa looks like the real deal. In his first game as a Charger, Bosa recorded two sacks and was flying around the field making plays. Having him back in the lineup should make this season more bearable to watch, as he is simply a ball magnet and highlight real to watch.

Who You Got?! Week 5

Predicting games isn't easy so try not to hate me too much when I don't pick your team to win. It's nothing personal; I just don't like your team. Now let’s just get to it. Who is going to lose this week? Probably not the teams I pick to lose…

Last week: 8-7
Overall: 37-26

Thursday Night Football (5:25 pm AZ time):

Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers

It’s not that the Cardinals are the less talented time, it’s quite the opposite. It’s the fact that the Cardinals have played awful this year. The 49ers have been competitive in all four of their games thus far and have home-field advantage tonight. I would not be shocked if the Cardinals took this game and/or dominated the 49ers. However, with everything I’ve seen from Arizona, I don’t trust them right now.

Sunday Morning Football (10:00 am AZ time):

Tennessee Titans @ Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins got embarrassed last week at Cincinnati. The Titans have not looked good most of the season, but do have a solid nucleus of talent. Behind DeMarco Murray, the Titans take this game in a low scoring affair with good ball control and a steady tempo on offense.

New York Jets @ Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers look good. The Jets are banged up and run into a red-hot Steelers offense. Le’Veon Bell is back to his old self and Antonio Brown will torch a porous Jets secondary. Pittsburgh by three possessions.

Chicago Bears @ Indianapolis Colts

Neither of these teams are very good. However, a bad Colts defense will give the Bears plenty of opportunities to score. That is, if they weren’t so banged up on offense. Andrew Luck takes some big hits but makes big time plays for his team and the Colts win this game by ten.

Houston Texans @ Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings just dismantled the Giants offense and erased Odell Beckham, Jr. That is not easy to do… The Texans offense has been hot-and-cold all season long and this dominant Vikings defense won’t treat them nicely. Being on the road certainly doesn’t help the Texans chances.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Detroit Lions

The Eagles are coming off a bye week and have looked great through three games. The Lions have been hit-and-miss with plenty of disappointment to go around. Carson Wentz looks like the rookie of the year and will keep that trend going when he and the Eagles coast to an easy win on the road.

Washington @ Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens lost by a single point last week after giving up four touchdown passes to Derek Carr and the Raiders. Two of those touchdown passes came on a short field thanks to the offense. This is the perfect game for the offense to get their mojo back while the defense continues to pin down and lock up this Washington offense. Being at home, I’ll take the Ravens by ten.

New England Patriots @ Cleveland Browns

This game could be on Mars and I would still take the Patriots by 20+. Tom Brady is back and he is pissed off. The Patriots will roll the Browns and blow them out of Cleveland like Art Modell did back in 1995.

Sunday Afternoon Football (1:05 and 1:25 pm AZ time):

Atlanta Falcons @ Denver Broncos

Whether it is Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch at quarterback one thing is for certain, this Denver defense will give the offense plenty of opportunities to score and win games. The Falcons are coming off a game in which Julio Jones had 300 receiving yards on 12 receptions. He’ll be lucky to get five receptions for 70 yards against the best defense in the league. Advantage, Denver.

San Diego Chargers @ Oakland Raiders

The Chargers are once again getting beat up and finding ways to lose games. The Raiders meanwhile, have found ways to win games and the offense looks to establish itself as one of the best in the league. With the Chargers missing Jason Verrett (out with a torn ACL), they will struggle to stop Amari Cooper and company on the way to a Raiders victory.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Dallas Cowboys

The Bengals have not been world beaters this season and continue to be one-dimensional on offense. The Cowboys have showed up to all their games and played mistake-free football behind Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. This will be a big game for the Cowboys and a win could really begin putting them on the map for the post-season. I’ll take the home team in a game that will come down to the final minutes.

Buffalo Bills @ Los Angeles Rams

Both of these teams started out slow out the gate and are red-hot now. With both teams out to prove they aren’t a laughing stock, this game is super unpredictable. It is tempting to just stick with the home team here, but I like the Bills’ chances against a bad Rams offense. With Todd Gurley continuing to struggle behind a bad Rams’ offensive line, the Bills shut down the Rams and win in a low scoring affair.

Sunday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

New York Giants @ Green Bay Packers

The Giants just got completely embarrassed at Minnesota and will run into another NFC North powerhouse on the road. Odell Beckham will be looking for a bounce back week and he should get one. It just won’t be enough to stop a Packers team fresh off a bye week and an offense that is ready to get rolling.

Monday Night Football (5:30 pm AZ time):

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers

I want to take the Panthers, especially if Cam Newton plays, but I don’t trust Newton’s health and the Panthers secondary just got torched by Julio Jones and company. Mike Evans is no slouch himself, and I think the Buccaneers will get the best of a banged up Panthers squad. If Derek Anderson plays this game won’t be close.

Quick Hits: Week 4

We are already a quarter of the way through the season and we can begin to see just what teams are made of. Pretenders and contenders are emerging. The NFL draft scene is beginning to take shape. And of course, we have some awesome drama to discuss. Let's get to it.

-       -  Let’s start off with the Odell Beckham drama. I am not a fan of how he is acting. There is a clear difference between being a diva receiver and being a baby, and right now he is acting like a baby. The temper tantrums, the lack of sportsmanship, and his recent statement that he isn’t having fun playing football anymore. He needs to realize that teams are targeting him in the sense that they know they can get inside of his head pretty easily. He has to learn to not let the mental aspect of the game affect his play on the field.

-       -  All that being said, the NFL isn’t being fair about the situation at all. The system of flagging the second person for unsportsman-like conduct is ridiculous. The NFL needs to implement some sort of instigator penalty and start going after guys who purposefully target Beckham. He was absolutely hit out-of-bounds Monday night, yet he was flagged for getting in the defender’s face. It’s a broken system and Beckham is paying for it.

-       -  Last week I asked what is going on with the Cardinals and I want to ask it again: What the hell is going on with the Cardinals? A team with serious Super Bowl expectations is now 1-3 on the year and looks closer to 8-8 at best than the 12-4 record I gave them this offseason. Now their star quarterback Carson Palmer is out at least this week against the 49ers with a concussion. The 49ers have been a tough match up this year and being at home could spell trouble for a struggling Cardinals team. This game is a must win and should they lose, their shot at the post-season is doubtful at best.

-       -  Tom Brady is returning this week from suspension against the Browns and oh man is he about to light them up. Brady, serving a four game suspension for Deflate Gate, is more than ready (and probably super pissed off) to get back to his dominant ways. With him at the helm, the Patriots could have a legitimate shot to go undefeated the rest of the season and maybe win their fifth Super Bowl in franchise history.

-       -  Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott have been great, even better than advertised, for the Cowboys. Prescott has set the record for most pass attempts without an interception for a rookie (131) and is fast approaching Tom Brady’s record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception (162). Meanwhile, Zeke currently leads the NFL in rushing yards (412). The two are both serious OROY favorites and could lead them to the playoffs in a weak NFC East. The Eagles are definitely a big surprise this season and will challenge them for the NFC East crown.

-       -  The Ravens parted ways with Justin Forsett this week with many thinking it is due to a young, talented back in Kenneth Dixon returning from injury. Here is another factor playing into Dixon’s favor, despite fellow running back Terrance West’s impressive stat line against the Raiders (21 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown), the Ravens have said they will not commit to anyone in the backfield. This can mean one of two things. One, the Ravens will go with the hot-hand on a week-to-week basis. Or two, the Ravens want to give Dixon plenty of opportunities and not limit him. If I were John Harbaugh, I would roll with the hot hand. However, as a huge Kenneth Dixon fan (he was my number two running back behind Ezekiel Elliott), I would love love LOVE to see him become the featured back in Baltimore.

-       -  Hanging around the AFC North here, the Steelers and Ravens are looking like serious contenders with the Browns looking towards the number one pick in 2017 and Cincinnati trailing for now. The ravens and Steelers are set to renew their rivalry in week eight in Baltimore and this will give us an excellent look at who should take the division title. The unstoppable Steelers offense will meet the immovable Ravens defense. Got to love it…

-       -  Speaking of the Steelers, Le’Veon Bell is back from suspension and is looking like his dominant self once again. Against the Chiefs, Bell put up an 18 for 144 yards plus dive receptions on six targets for 34 yards stat line. For all you math geeks, he averaged a whopping eight yards per carry. Bell’s return will help to put the Steelers right at the top of the standings for best offense in the league. Bell joins Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown to become the league’s best triplets.

-       -  A report came out today that Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett has a partially torn ACL and is now being ruled out for the rest of the season. This is a huge loss for the Chargers, as Verrett’s aggressive play style has been largely underrated in the Chargers’ secondary.

-       -  Bengals’ Tyler Eifert has a new setback added to his return from his broken ankle, this time it’s his back. Eifert has yet to see the field this season and with all the injuries going against him, he may not play at all this season. This is very unfortunate news for the Bengals who are sorely missing Eifert in the red-zone.

-       -  Bears wide receiver Kevin White has hit injured reserve with a fractured fibula and high ankle sprain. This is so sad, as he missed his entire rookie season with a stress fracture in his shin. White played the first four games of the season, recording a 19 receptions on 36 targets for 187 yards stat line.

2017 Mock Draft 2.0: Quarter Season Edition

Due to the overwhelming popularity of my last mock draft, I have decided to make another one after the first quarter of the season. I want to thank you all so much for reading this blog and allowing me to share my opinions in a crowded environment that is social media. That all being said, here is how I have developed draft order with tiebreakers:

-         Win/loss record
-         Divisional record
-         Conference win/loss record
-         Non-conference win/loss record
-         Current win/loss streak
-         If all else fails, I flip a coin

Now that that’s established we can dive right in.

1.     Cleveland Browns (0-4): DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame
2.     Tennessee Titans (1-3): Myles Garrett, EDGE, Texas A&M
3.     Detroit Lions (1-3): Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
4.     New Orleans Saints (1-3): Johnathan Allen, DT, Alabama

7.     Miami Dolphins (1-3): Brad Kaaya, QB, Miami
8.     Indianapolis Colts (1-3): Jabrill Peppers, LB/S, Michigan
9.     Arizona Cardinals (1-3): Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
10.  San Francisco 49ers (1-3): Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
11.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-3): Jamal Adams, S, LSU
12.  New York Jets (1-3): Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
13.  Chicago Bears (1-3): Dalvin Cook, RB, FSU
14.  Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3): Derek Barnett, EDGE, Tennessee
15.  New York Giants (2-2): Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
16. Cincinnati Bengals (2-2): Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State
17.  Buffalo Bills: (2-2): Justin Evans, S, Texas A&M
18.  Washington (2-2): Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
19.  Kansas City Chiefs (2-2): Desmond King, CB, Iowa
20.  Green Bay Packers (2-1): Carl Lawson, EDGE, Auburn
21.  Oakland Raiders (3-1): Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
22.  Seattle Seahawks (3-1): Pat Elfein, OG, Ohio State
23.  New England Patriots (3-1): Charles Harris, EDGE, Missouri
24.  Dallas Cowboys (3-1): Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
25.  Atlanta Falcons (3-1): Jourdan Lewis, CB, Michigan
26.  Tennessee Titans (via Rams 3-1): Tre’Davious White, CB, LSU
27.  Houston Texans (3-1): Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
28.  Baltimore Ravens (3-1): Ryan Anderson, EDGE, Alabama
29.  Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1): Tim Williams, EDGE, Alabama
30.  Cleveland Browns (via Eagles 3-0): Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida
31.  Denver Broncos (4-0): O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
32.  Philadelphia Eagles (via Vikings 4-0): Devonte Fields, EDGE, Louisville

-         Every draft analysist has draft crushes. Here are some of my favorites through five weeks of college football (besides some of the more obvious names): Jamal Adams, Ryan Anderson, Sidney Jones, Dalvin Cook, Devonte Fields and Royce Freeman.
-         This year’s draft looks to be top heavy, especially as certain positions such as EDGE defender, cornerback, and running back. With all that in mind, we can see one of two things. One, good players from other positions will be pushed down the board. Two, other players will rise up the board while players in a deep position will be pushed down due to depth.
-         I like to do my mocks based on how I view a player, what I think will happen, and best available. Some notable names to be left out of this mock include: Dan Feeney, Royce Freeman, DeMarcus Walker, Adoree’ Jackson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike McGlinchey, Dawuane Smoot, Cordrea Tankersley, Raekwon McMillan and Chris Wormley.
-         Some names are in this list that previously were not mentioned in my last mock. As is with every season, guys will move up and down the board constantly as the year progresses. Keep in mind, this is only the beginning. Once the draft process starts, things are really going to start shaking up.
-         Alabama and Michigan look to dominate this year’s draft. It isn’t a surprise that they are both big time contenders for this year’s college football playoffs. With Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh hanging around their respective schools for a while, we are going to continue seeing these teams dominate the draft. Alabama has been at it for years, but consider this Michigan’s renaissance.
-         LSU is a school that puts in NFL caliber players and yet never does anything relevant during the season. However, with the recent firing of head coach Les Miles, maybe the Tigers can find a head coach to take this program to new heights and win championships. Guys like Leonard Fournette, Travin Dural and Malachi Dupre are having their talents wasted away. Better coaching could result in guys like them being first round picks (Fournette being an obvious exception, as he appears to be a top 10 lock).
-         Alright, that’s a ton of college talk. Let’s bring our focus back to the NFL. This mock is based off current standings and I would truly be shocked if teams such as Arizona or Carolina wound up with top 10 picks. There is a lot of season left and players and teams will be continually shuffled around until we get to draft day.
-         Five weeks into the college season and we can already tell just how weak this wide receiver class is. Outside of Mike Williams, I don’t see any other receiver worth even a top 50 pick. Obviously there will be guys taken that high because of how the NFL is focused around passing the football. Names like Isaiah Ford, Darren Carrington, and Corey Davis are popular names right now in the draft community. The two I named in my previous mock, KD Cannon and Artavis Scott, are slipping down my board fast. JuJu Smith-Schuster is now being regarded as a system wide receiver and with USC wide receivers’ recent track record, odds are stacked against him.
-         Last point, the quarterback class is super thin. The consensus top three names appear to be DeShone Kizer, Deshaun Watson, and Brad Kaaya. Kizer has had a meteoric rise to the top, whereas Watson and Kaaya are watching their stock slip due to bad/average play. The senior crop is universally disliked, with Chad Kelly appearing to be the “top dog”. It is not a good year to need a quarterback.
